Antibiotics used to Treat Acne

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

When your acne gets worse, you feel helpless and desolated, to the verge of desperation. When nothing works to cure your acne, you will need to consult your physician for more advanced treatment by antibiotics. Nowadays with the advancement of medical science it is not hard to find a suitable treatment for any type of acne condition and for last few decades certain antibiotics such as Doxycycline have become immensely popular among individuals who are suffering from mild to moderate acne conditions or those who failed to find any improvement from topical treatments.

Antibiotics work by selectively killing the bacteria. They do not cause damage to the cells of the body. By killing the bacteria antibiotics reduce the infection and inflammation. Oral antibiotics are the fastest way to treat such infections.

Doxycycline being a strong antimicrobial agent acts by destroying the P. acnes bacteria deep inside the jammed skin pores. These bacteria derive a protein called lipase which is essential for their survival. This antibiotic blocks the production of this protein which in turn impedes P. acnes to perform some activities which seem to be essential for their growth and repairment of cells.

Being unable to proliferate further these acne causing bacteria eventually get exterminated from acne lesions. This significantly thwarts the infection inside skin pores. This medicine also works to mitigate cellular activities which initiate inflammatory reactions inside our cells. Thus Doxycycline helps to control the production of acne causing bacteria inside jammed hair follicles as well as it also alleviates the inflammation of acne blemishes which plays an important factor in the removal of acne.

How well does it work?

* For severe acne, it cures approximately 35-38 percent of patients after one course of treatment.
* 70 percent of the people who take Accutane?® experience long-term remission.
* Adult women have higher relapse rates than teenagers.
* One course of treatment will take on average, 4-6 months.
* The daily dose is most often determined at 0.5 - 1mg per kg of your body weight.
* The total dose, that is, the total amount taken over the whole treatment period should be not less than 120mg per kg of body weight for long lasting benefit.

With most of the antibiotics used to treat acne, side effects may include photosensitivity (higher risk of sunburn), upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, hives, lupus-like symptoms and skin discoloration. Some women report a higher incidence of vaginal yeast infection while taking antibiotics; these can usually be treated with over-the-counter antifungal medication or a prescription antifungal, such as diflucan. Tetracycline is not given to pregnant women or children under 12 years of age because it can discolor developing teeth.

Dolphin 'Therapy' A Dangerous Fad, Emory Researchers Warn

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

People suffering from chronic mental or physical disabilities should not resort to a dolphin "healing" experience, warn two researchers from Emory University. Lori Marino, senior lecturer in the Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology Program, has teamed with Scott Lilienfeld, professor in the Department of Psychology, to launch an educational campaign countering claims made by purveyors of what is known as dolphin-assisted therapy (DAT).

"Dolphin-assisted therapy is not a valid treatment for any disorder," says Marino, a leading dolphin and whale researcher. "We want to get the word out that it's a lose-lose situation - for people and for dolphins."

While swimming with dolphins may be a fun, novel experience, no scientific evidence exists for any long-term benefit from DAT, Marino says. She adds that people who spend thousands of dollars for DAT don't just lose out financially - they put themselves, and the dolphin, at risk of injury or infection. And they are supporting an industry that - outside of the United States - takes dolphins from the wild in a brutal process that often leaves several dolphins dead for every surviving captive.

Marino and Lilienfeld reviewed five studies published during the past eight years and found that the claims for efficacy for DAT were invalid. Their conclusions were published recently in Anthrozo??s, the journal of the International Society for Anthrozoology, in a paper entitled "Dolphin-Assisted Therapy: More Flawed Data and More Flawed Conclusions."

"We found that all five studies were methodologically flawed and plagued by several threats to both internal and construct validity," wrote Marino and Lilienfeld, who conducted a similar review in 1998. "We conclude that nearly a decade following our initial review, there remains no compelling evidence that DAT is a legitimate therapy, or that it affords any more than fleeting improvements in mood."

An upcoming issue of the newsletter of the American Psychological Association's Division of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities will feature another article by Marino and Lilienfeld, entitled "Dolphin-Assisted Therapy for Autism and Other Developmental Disorders: A Dangerous Fad."

"We want to reach psychologists with this message, because DAT is increasingly being applied to children with developmental disabilities, although there is no good evidence that it works," said Lilienfeld, a clinical psychologist. "It's hard to imagine the rationale for a technique that, at best, makes a child feel good in the short run, but could put the child at risk of harm."

The Emory scientists have timed their campaign to coincide with a recent call by two UK-based non-profits - the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and Research Autism - to ban the practice of DAT.

While Marino is against taking dolphins from the wild and holding them captive for any purpose, she finds DAT especially egregious, because the people who are being exploited are the most vulnerable - including desperate parents who are willing to try anything to help a child with a disability.

Many people are under the impression that dolphins would never harm a human. "In reality, injury is a very real possibility when you place a child in a tank with a 400-pound wild animal that may be traumatized from being captured," Marino says.

Dolphins are bred in captivity in U.S. marine parks, but in other countries they are often taken from the wild. "If people knew how these animals were captured, I don't think they would want to swim with them in a tank or participate in DAT," Marino says, referring to an annual "dolphin drive" in Japan. "During the dolphin drives hundreds of animals are killed, or panicked and die of heart attacks, in water that's red with their blood, while trainers from facilities around the world pick out young animals for their marine parks. They hoist them out of the water, sometimes by their tail flukes, and take them away."

Each live dolphin can bring a fisherman $50,000 or more, she says. "The marine parks make millions off of dolphins, so that's a drop in the bucket. It's an irony that dolphins are among the most beloved, and the most exploited, animals in the world," Marino says.

Computerized Program Helps Teens Quit Smoking

Posted in Unspecified

A cigarette hanging from a teenager's mouth is a sight that makes most adults cringe. With 22% of high school students and 10% of middle school children smoking in America, the habit is considered an epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, a recent article in Pediatric Nursing journal shows that there are effective quitting programs available that offer hope.

Deborah J. Fritz and her co-authors report in the January-February 2008 issue that the Computerized Adolescent Smoking Cessation Program (CASCP) is effective in getting teenagers to quit, inexpensive, and easily implemented in schools.

Fritz studied 128 teenagers, 14-19 years old, divided in half for control and experimental groups. The experimental group completed four CASCP computer sessions as well as questionnaires and post-intervention testing. Not only did the experimental group report more quit attempts than the control group subjects, who did not participate in the computer sessions, but 23% of the teens actually quit smoking.

The encouraging results show the CASCP program does work and that such programs should be implemented in schools whenever possible, says Fritz. Nurses play a key role in recruiting adolescents into smoking cessation programs and/or referring them to agencies such as the American Lung Association for help. School nurses should also advocate for implementing programs like CASCP and for incorporating smoking cessation into health classes.

Popular herbal diet supplement- does it work?

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Many people place a significant premium on looking trim and slender. Unfortunately, most people are overweight, dashing to pieces the dream of looking trim. Predictably, there are hundreds of diet plans, weight loss programs and dietary supplements that promise to help you lose the weight you need to get the body you want. But, do these weight loss plans, programs and supplements really work? Specifically, does Hoodia, one of the highest-profile weight loss pills, actually help you to lose weight?

Below, we'll take a closer look at the Hoodia diet pill. We'll peel back the covers and peer into how Hoodia works, the science behind the hype and whether you should consider using the pill.

Understanding The Process Behind The Pill

Those who advertise Hoodia claim that taking the pill helps to reduce your appetite. By doing so, you'll ultimately eat less and as a result, lose weight. Since the Hoodia diet pill was introduced into the U.S. years ago, many have suggested that those claims are false. They've said that there is no evidence showing the pill's ability to suppress a person's appetite. Therefore, the premise on which the pill's popularity is built is faulty. But, research shows otherwise.

Hype Vs. Science: What The Research Says

Laboratory research has shown that there is a molecule within Hoodia that causes suppression to a person's appetite. Commonly referred to as P57, this molecule is believed to affect the hypothalamus region of the brain, which controls hunger. By regulating the impulse to eat (especially when the body doesn't require food), Hoodia can force the body to burn through the resources it has already stored.

Further studies conducted by Dr. Richard M. Goldfarb yielded results that suggested that Hoodia is, in fact, effective in helping people lose weight. In Dr. Goldfarb's study, volunteers took the Hoodia diet pill daily for a 28-day period while keeping their exercise and eating habits. During that time, the group of volunteers lost, on average, 3.3% of their body weight. While there is plenty of hype behind the marketing campaigns that are promoting Hoodia, scientists seem to tentatively agree that the pill can result in weight loss.

What The Hoodia Diet Pill Can Do For You

First, it's important to understand how Hoodia can be used safely. Taking the pill as described on its packaging or prescribed by your doctor is fine. However, many people treat the Hoodia diet pill as if it's a magic weight loss solution. They mistakenly think the more they take, the less they'll eat and as a result, the more weight they'll lose. Don't allow Hoodia to exacerbate any eating disorders that you have developed. Hoodia is safe to use as long as you use it appropriately.

Taking The Next Step

There's no need to be apprehensive about trying Hoodia. Millions of people take it daily without issue.

Jim Mackey is a renowned dietician. He has been advising people on how to maintain a proper diet and how to lose those extra calories. If you want to know more about Hoodia diet pill, weight lose, south beach diet, diet plans, diabetic diet you can visit www.dietsinreview.com

Cold sore lysine - does it really help cold sores or is it just so much hype?

Now you can know the truth. By the time you finish this article, you will discover some little known facts about cold sore lysine treatment options.

Cold sore lysine cures have been the subject of many studies and much news. Most of the research has been quite positive for using lysine as a treatment for all varieties of herpes sores. But, sadly, much of this information is incorrect.

FACT: Lysine extinguishes cold sores very much the same as water quenches a fire.

A fire is extinguished with water because the water prevents oxygen from feeding the fire. Lysine can stop or prevent cold sores the same way. Lysine starves the herpes virus of what it must have to replicate.

Right now, we need to take a look at what really causes cold sores and how lysine can literally stop them in their tracks.

The herpes simplex virus moves to the surface for the sole purpose of creating new virus. This parasite virus enters a cell and forces that cell to produce new virus clones. When full, the cell is broken open to spill out the fresh virus.

The open wound we see on our face is the visible result of thousands of adjacent cells being destroyed by the cloning process of the herpes virus - either HSV-1 or HSV-2.

FACT: Arginine is the oxygen that makes cold sores burn.

Arginine is required by the cells to build new herpes simplex virus. The cell cannot be a virus factory for herpes if it does not have sufficient arginine available.

Arginine and lysine are considered essential amino acids. Your body cannot create these. They are essential for your health and must come from your diet. Each amino acid has a specific function in the body.

Your nerve cells store arginine in a specific location within the cell. Cells that are forced to create herpes virus will do so only until the arginine stores are used up. Arginine is the main building block of the herpes virus. Without it, no virus cloning can take place.

FACT: Lysine smothers cold sores by making arginine unavailable.

Lysine is also stored within the cells, in the same storage area as arginine. The more lysine in your diet, the more of it is stored in the cells. And the more lysine, the less room there is for storing arginine. Basically, lysine and arginine fight for the same space.

Lysine does not support the creation of the herpes virus. And it keeps the arginine from being available for virus replication by replacing it in the storage area of the cells.

FACT: Lysine must be taken orally to reach the cells and be absorbed.

The best way to flood your cells with cold sore lysine is by eating high lysine foods. Dairy products, meats, and fish are excellent sources of this amino acid.

Taking lysine supplements is much more convenient for most people. The body does not utilize supplemental lysine as well as food sources. For this reason, a combination of food and supplements is the very best treatment of choice.

You may have seen topical remedies that contain lysine. These may be helpful treatments for cold sores - but not because of the lysine.

Amino acids, such as lysine, do not go into the cells through the skin. Putting it on the skin before the sores blossom is of no value. And applying the lysine after the sore opens up, even if it did work, is too late. The damage is already done.

IT IS TRUE - lysine does work well at putting out those burning cold sores. Also, sufficient lysine on a daily basis is useful as a preventative measure. But lysine can get into the cells only if taken orally.

Lysine is as safe as food. Lysine capsules usually come in 500 mg. size. 4000 mg. per day is common during an outbreak. 500 to 1000 mg. daily is the usual amount for prevention.

Beating your cold sores may be as simple as eating high lysine foods, avoiding high arginine foods, and taking a booster dose of lysine in capsules. This is the very best way to get therapeutic levels of cold sore lysine.
